AIRBAGS & TINNITUS

inflating airbags can cause tinnitus & hearing loss

The Tinnitus Homepage

An inflating car airbag is dangerously loud and may cause injuries, like tinnitus and hearing loss.

An exploding, inflating airbag, or -- worse -- the combination of exploding, inflating SIMULTANEOUS front and SIDE airbags, create tremendous noise. Don't forget car airbags deploy in a very small, enclosed space.

The human pain threshold is 140 dB. A jet taking off from 100 ft away is 135 dB.

Inflating car airbags can reach a noise level of 178 decibals.

EVERY 10 DECIBALS IS A TWOFOLD INCREASE IN NOISE!

AIRBAGS have long been known to cause tinnitus and other problems - for more information you can visit the AIRBAGS link above, or AIRBAGS & TINNITUS

Below are excerpts of an EMAIL INTERVIEW, with someone who suffered hearing damage and tinnitus  as a result of an inflating airbag.

Subject: Air Bags & Tinnitus
I tried this:
(TINNITUS-SUFFERER POSTS A LINK TO "Laser Therapy" TREATMENT FOR TINNITUS)
So far, no improvment.

Re: Air Bags & Tinnitus
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HAVING LASER THERAPY FOR TINNITUS?
Maybe 6 weeks. I'm supposed to wait 3 months or so. So far it's not helping.

I'D RATHER SUFFER THE CAR ACCIDENT, PERSONALLY. FROM WHAT PEOPLE WRITE ME, THESE AIRBAGS CAUSE TINNITUS VERY SEVERELY.
Yeah, air bags are the worst. 170 decibels in a split second.

DOES YOUR HEARING TEST NORMAL?
I have upper range hearing loss in my right ear. The other ear tests as normal, but not from what I hear.

PEOPLE WITH TINNITUS WRITE ME THAT ALOT. "MY HEARING TESTS NORMAL - BUT I HAVE THIS TINNITUS PROBLEM."
YOU SAID YOUR LEFT EAR TESTED NORMAL. IS THE LOSS IN YOUR RIGHT EAR SIGNIFICANT?
It's high frequency loss. It's significant. I can't hear those sounds in that ear. It's gone.

DID THEY TEST TO MATCH THE FREQUENCY OF YOUR TINNITUS?
No, the tones change.
Hard to describe because the sounds can change during the day.

HAVE YOU TRIED THE TINNITUS MEDS MENTIONED ON MY WEBSITE?
Not all. Just the Arches (which is mostly ginko, zinc, garlic), and the NAC. No help, so far.

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, HYPERBARIC OXYGEN and LASER TREATMENTS ARE SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO VASO-DILATORS, IN THAT YOU'RE TRYING TO "NOURISH" and REJUVENATE THE EAR WITH OXYGEN and BLOOD etc.
Hyperberic is supposed to work if done within 3 months of the acoustic trauma. I didn't really help me.  The Laser is supposed to help grow back the damaged hairs in the cochlea.
I think maybe stem cell therapy (in the future) may be the only hope for tinnitus.

AIR BAGS & TINNITUS. MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA THE DAMAGE AIR BAGS CAN CAUSE...
ONE THEORY IS THAT OUR KIND OF TINNITUS -- NOISE-INDUCED, MINE BY A FIRE ALARM, YOUR TINNITUS BY AIR BAGS -- CAUSE OUR EARS' COCHLEA HAIR TO DIE.
(SOME RESEARCHERS THINK THE FREQUENCY OF TINNITUS MATCHES THE FREQUENCY OF HEARING WE'VE ** lost ** -- THAT IT'S OUR BRAIN'S ATTEMPT TO FILL IN THE "GAP" IN HEARING.)
I believe that, because the random bell tones in my right ear are in the range that I can no longer hear in that ear.

YES - BUT I GET EMAILS ALL THE TIME FROM PEOPLE WITH TINNITUS WHO HAVE NO ATTENDANT HEARING LOSS...  YOU HAVE IT IN AN EAR THAT TESTS NORMALLY...
That's true, but I think there are multiple hairs for hearing a certain frequency. Maybe only some of  those hairs died. The air bags - damaged hairs are like little sensors that have been smashed, and  are reporting ghost tones -- tinnitus - to the brain. They must either die, or heal to stop  this misinformation from being transmitted.

WE SHOULD KEEP IN TOUCH. THE NATURE OF OUR TINNITUS INJURY WAS SIMILAR - ACOUSTIC TRAUMA. YOUR TINNITUS FROM AIR BAGS, MINE FROM A FIRE ALARM. IF SOMETHING HELPS YOU IT MIGHT HELP ME, AND VICE-VERSA.
GOOD LUCK. SOME PEOPLE DO GET BETTER FROM THIS. WITH TIME. EVEN AFTER A YEAR OR MORE. NOT COMMON, BUT IT DOES HAPPEN.
I'm hoping, but I don't expect.

If you have Tinnitus, you may want to consider ELIMINATING THE AIRBAGS IN YOUR CAR. Further exposure to loud noise is NOT recommended, as this often makes tinnitus worse, sometimes permanently.
